About us

As part of the Australian Student Christian Movement, the Student Christian Movement Queensland...

What motivates SCM

The dynamic of God’s presence is liberation and reconciliation. We believe that these are gospel values. God’s presence brings "new creation" seeking to leaven human fellowship with justice and peace. In our gatherings, we seek to live the kingdom here and now, awaiting its fulfilment at the end of history.

SCM seeks social justice

SCM seeks social justice. Jesus says that the hungry, the meek, the poor, those who mourn, and the persecuted will be restored and vindicated in his kingdom (Matthew 5:1-11; Luke 6:20-26). We affirm that Christians are to be found in service, advocacy, and solidarity with the world’s disenfranchised.

SCM seeks to be a peacemaker

In the gospel Jesus says "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God" (Matthew 5:9). The Student Christian Movement calls on God’s people to take part in action for peace and to resist violence.

SCM seeks to care for the environment

As the Psalmist says, "The earth is the Lord’s and all that is in it, the world, and those who live in it" (Psalm 24:1). Since God has entrusted us with the care of creation itself, concern for the environment should be natural for a Christian.

SCM values the creative arts

We believe that the visual arts, music, and words are important components of spirituality. These provide path to sensitivity and maturity in one’s faith, leading us gently to an awareness of the presence of God. In their gatherings SCMers have used icons, Taize chant, meditation, and periods of silence as well as more traditional liturgical practices.

SCM supports human rights and equality

As each person bears the image of God, we affirm the equality, worth and natural rights of each person, regardless of race, gender or sexuality.

SCM affirms the ethical use of science and critical enquiry

SCM affirms the university environment which encourages the advancement of scientific knowledge and the ethical use of such knowledge. SCM is also comfortable in an environment of critical enquiry that tests existing knowledge and beliefs in terms of their foundations and effects.

SCM is open to affirming theological dialogue

We seek to provide a supportive forum for the exploration of theological beliefs and ideas, believing that this is the way to Christian maturity.

SCM is ecumenical, seeking to bring Christians together

The Student Christian Movement is ecumenical, because it seeks the unity and renewal of the whole church. SCM acknowledges the different expressions of faith found across differing Christian traditions and experience. SCM is committed to ecumenical co-operation amongst Christians.
