Vale Professor Louis Charles Birch

08/02/1918 - 19/12/2009

A geneticist, he specialised in population ecology and was also well known as a theologian, writing widely on the topic of science and religion, winning the Templeton Prize in 1990. The prize recognised his work ascribing intrinsic value to all life. Until these last days his mind was still as sharp as ever and was able to talk briefly to most of his visitors.

He will be sadly missed by so many, and particularly by many at the University of Sydney where his academic appointments have included Professor of Zoology from 1960-63, and Professor of Biology from 1963-83. He has been styled Emeritus Professor since 1983.The Australian Student Christian Movement was always very dear to his heart and he never ceased to talk about its influence on his life.
